Mix of authentic and sustainable clay pavers ties in with Meijendel’s dune landscape
Meijendel’s beautiful vast dune landscape from drinking water company Dunea in the Netherlands
Meijendel is a vast dune area to the north of The Hague, the Netherlands. Drinking water company Dunea manages three dune areas which form part of the Hollandse Duinen National Park, including Meijendel. These three areas are crucial for the purification of drinking water.
The combination of the protection of this area of land on the one hand and its function within the drinking water supply chain on the other hand has ensured the preservation of a unique natural coastal landscape of dunes.

There is a lot of recreational pressure on this area due to it being located in the most densely populated area of the Netherlands. By means of consultation with the towns in the region, work is being carried out on both the maintenance and layout of the area as well as the integration of the numerous functions (sea wall, water supply, nature and recreation).
Meijendel Farm lies in the centre of the area. This is where you will find De Tapuit, the visitor centre of Dunea (Drinkwaterbedrijf) and Pannenkoekenboerderij Meijendel, the perfect starting point for a discovery tour of the dunes and water. Next to De Tapuit there is a barn for 20 horses.

DESIGN BY JOS VAN DE LINDELOOF
Jos van de Lindeloof tuin- en Landschapsarchitecten was commissioned to draw up a landscaping plan for this location. The design is based on the agricultural history and the current recreational demand within the area and fits in with the dune landscape. The design combines the intensive functioning of this location with the natural values of the dunes, while the surrounding landscape remains visible and perceptible.
Later, the company was also commissioned to create an educational water playground based on the theme of water extraction. It is now a place where young people can find out about the water from Dunea themselves: working together to provide water, from source to tap.

MIX OF CLAY PAVERS FROM VANDE MOORTEL
Jos van de Lindeloof used clay pavers from Steenbakkerij Vande Moortel for the access road and the area around the visitors’ centre and Pannenkoekenboerderij. Jos van de Lindeloof: “Various suppliers submitted samples. But it was mainly the authenticity of the clay paver combined with its mechanical processability and the sustainability certificates provided that led to us choosing this Vande Moortel brick. The shades chosen fit in well with the architecture of the buildings and blend in naturally with the dune landscape. They provide unity and pull the whole project area together.”
Another special feature is the lava in the foundations which enables rainwater to be stored and a metered supply to be provided for the rainwater discharge system of the Municipality of Wassenaar.
