Septem 8025: a brown brick with subtle shading and an ecological trump card
In the centre of Dendermonde, a new replacement building has brought a new dimension and a diversified range of care services to the Mariatroon residential care centre. The new residential care centre now has an increased capacity and provides accommodation for specific types of care such as the treatment of people with Huntington's disease.
The new building design consists of an elongated L-shaped higher volume and an adjoining sunken volume as a direct consequence of the urban design regulations which stipulate that the construction height of the Arsenal, a former military building, must not be exceeded.
The building is designed as a large 'house' that sits perfectly alongside the existing neighbouring residences, both spatially and architecturally. It was mainly constructed in brown external masonry with subtle shading using the Septem 8025 facing brick, interrupted by windows.
VK Architecten: "We were won over by the restricted depth of the facing brick which enabled us to use 3 cm more insulation compared to a wall structure with classic 10 cm façade cladding. This facing brick also has a warm small-scale feel so that it fits in perfectly with its immediate surroundings."
The living spaces take the form of concrete volumes protruding from the façade, allowing the occupiers maximum enjoyment of the view and the garden from those spaces. Each volume has its own terrace. The volumes give the façade a personal, playful, small-scale and architectural appearance.
As much green as possible was chosen for the outside space, giving the occupier a restful view from the whole building.
