Holiday in your own garden with a hint of exclusivity thanks to sustainable ‘Oyster grey’ clay pavers

Show garden of garden contractor Didier Van Volsem wins over visitors with its craftsmanship

The garden of Didier Van Volsem, designed by renowned garden designer Erik De Waele, is situated in the undulating Pajottenland, also known as the Tuscany of the Low Countries.

The main inspiration for the design was the aspect of ‘perception’. The garden has become the calling card of garden designer Van Volsem, where potential customers are invited in order to be inspired and find fresh ideas for their gardens. They are also visually won over by the craftsmanship that is displayed in the precise laying of the clay pavers, for example.

A rather formal pond was chosen for the design but the garden still retains the charms of its rural setting due to the use of authentic, tumbled Ancienne Belgique clay pavers. With its subtle shading and grey hues, the ‘Oyster grey’ fits in perfectly with the other paving materials in the garden. On the terrace, the clay pavers were used in conjunction with Belgian bluestone while on the driveway, they were combined with cobblestones. The finishing of the pavers with cement joints called for a high level of precision but brings the resulting benefit that a minimum amount of maintenance is required.

Around the swimming pool and the pond, we see many evergreen plants which means that the garden will stay green all year round. Banks of roses and hydrangeas also provide colour in the garden while holly bushes serve to provide structure in the various parts of the garden.

“This garden shows that the feeling of being on holiday is never far away. So in the future, we will see gardens and the outdoor environment becoming much more important. People want to invest in ‘outdoor living’ which translates into carefully designed terraces, poolhouses, swimming pools, etc.
As a garden contractor, I am happy to be able to help people look for that restful feeling of being on holiday in their garden”, says Didier Van Volsem.

Tuinen Van Volsem has been creating and maintaining gardens for 25 years; In and around our municipality, we look after around 300 customers, normal private gardens (very important) and a couple of really big gardens for famous people. Every beautiful garden starts with a good design and for that service, I regularly use various garden designers who help me achieve stunning results, whatever the budget.
